Cornelius Verburg served as alderman, 5 terms, and as city commissioner 2 terms, carrying, at the time of his election to this office, 28 of 32 precincts. He was serving as Mayor of Kalamazoo at the time of his death, which occurred October 25, 1923. He was the second Kalamazoo mayor to die while in office. Elizabeth Grimes Verburg was born November 1858 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She died August 1921 in Kalamazoo. Elizabeth and Cornelius had five children: Myron Cornelius Verburg, a dentist, John George Verburg, Genevieve (Jennie) Verburg, Cornelius (Neil) H. Verburg,and Carl E. Verburg. They are buried in Block 3, Lot 69 of Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo, MI Additional Comments: Cornelius is my great grand uncle and Elizabeth my great grand aunt.
