Thomas was born in Kent, England and married Jane Burstow. Thomas and Jane emmigrated to the town of Canadice, Ontario County, New York, in 1846 where all their children except Owen were born. Sometime after 1855 Thomas and his family moved to Portage Township, Kalamazoo County, MI where they established a farm between Austin and Long lakes. Their children were: Alfred (buried in Sand Lake), Washington, Mary, Alva (buried in Sand Lake), Franklin, Alice, and Owen (buried in Sand Lake). In 1871 Thomas and Jane sold a right-of-way through their farm along the west side of Long Lake to the Grand Rapids and Indiana railroad which would connect Fort Wayne to Boyne Falls and eventually Mackinaw City, an important means of transportation in Western Michigan for many years.
