Rice, Civil War Veteran, Passes Away While Here on Visit Loren A. Rice, of Kalkaska, this state, died of heart trouble and old age at the home of his niece, Mrs. W. J. Mills, 599 N. 5th Street, last evening at the age of 84 years. Sketch of His Life Lorin A. Rice was born in Georgetown, Madison County, N.Y., in 1831. He was a brother of the late Franklin H. Rice and C.C. Rice of Battle Creek and Thos. J. Rice of Kalkaska. He also leaves a widow, one daughter, Mrs. May Ireland, of Dailey, and two sons, Willard S. of Kalkaska and DeForest of Portersville, Cal. Mr. Rice was married to Miss Cornelia Taggert in this city, April 29, 1857 and resided in Niles for ten years, then moved to Kalkaska where they had lived for 49 years and are known as being among the oldest settlers of Kalkaska county. He was a veteran of the civil war and belonged to Co. L., Second Michigan Cavalry, of which his brother, F.H. Rice, Hampton Haggerty, Roger Burns and Robert Lingrell and R.F. Williams of this city, were members. Brief services will be held at the home of W.J. Mills, 599 north Fifth street, Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock, and the remains will be taken to Kalkaska for burial.
