CLAIM FOR Jeremiah Kettle father of Fredk. S. Kettle Late Co. "B" 6th Reg’t. Mich. Cav. AFFIDAVIT OF Electa Pearson. Filed by CYRUS E. PERKINS, ATTORNEY FOR CLAIMANT, GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN. STATE OF MICHIGAN, County of Kent, ss: In the matter of the claim for Father’s Pension of Jeremiah father of Frederick S. Kettle of Company "B" 6th Regiment Mich. Cav. Vols. Personally came before me, the Register of the Probate Court in and for aforesaid County and State, Electa Pearson, of Wyoming Twp in the County of Kent, State of Michigan reputable and entitled to credit; and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid claim as follows: My Post Office address in South Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Mich. My age in 67 years. I have known said claimant for about 34 years. When I first became acquainted with him he lived in Lamont, Ottawa Co., Mich. and shortly after this moved into a small farm (then a piece of pine stump land) in Blendon, Ottawa Co. Mich. He bought the land for 50 cents an acre. I knew his son Fredk. above named and know he lived at home with his father and helped him about the farm. About 1859 Jeremiah the claimant went West and mortgaged his farm to obtain the money to go and to leave some behind to support his family. The farm was sold in said mortgages before he returned. The boy Fredk. stayed at home for some time after his father went away and then he too left home. Shortly after the war broke out he enlisted. He died in the service. When Jeremiah came back from the West he had aged a good deal and was critical with rheumatism and has been more or less ever since. His age too has kept him from accumulating any property since and he’s now without any property. His present wife is my sister and I have had to assist at times in their support. The claimant in now very aged and afflicted with a cancer so that he can do nothing at all. I further declare that I have no interest in said claim and am not concerned in its prosecution. Signature of Affiant, Electa Pearson. ********************************************************************** May 7, 1889 [A stamp mark reads US PENSION OFFICE MAY 17, 1889]. Additional Evidence. CLAIM FOR Jeremiah Kettle, father Fredk. S. Kettle, Late Co. "B" 6th Reg’t. Mich. Cav. Vols. AFFIDAVIT OF Dudley Cunningham. Cav. Vols: Personally came before me the Register of the Probate Court in and for aforesaid County and State, Dudley Cunningham, of Wyoming in the County of Kent, State of Michigan reputable and entitled to credit; and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid claim as follows: My Post Office address is South Grand Rapids, Kent Co. Mich. My age is 46 years. I have known said claimant upwards of 30 years and we also were acquainted with his son said Fredk. up to his enlistment. For some years before his said enlistment I was a neighbor living in Georgetown Ottawa Co. while they lived in the adjoining Town of Blendon. The claimant owned a small poor pine stump farm (40 acres). He finally concluded to go West and mortgaged his farm to get the money to go. The farm was sold under the mortgage before he returned. Fredk. stayed at home and helped his father until after the latter went West. Shortly after that the war 1861-65 broke out and Fredk. enlisted. I remember his riding down home with me after he had enlisted and his telling me of giving his step-mother some of his enlistment money for her support and I know that while his father was West as aforesaid Fredk. used to help his step-mother [ five words ] wages. He died in the service. When the claimant came home, I think about 1862 he was somewhat broken in health and getting along in years and was never able to accumulate any property. He lives with his wife on a forty acre farm which belongs to his wife and is utterly helpless to do any work being afflicted with cancer. I further declare that I have no interest in said claim, and am not concerned in its prosecution. Dudley Cunningham. Sworn to and subscribed before me this day by the above name affiant; and I certify that I read said affidavit to said affiant, and acquainted him with its contents before he executed the same. I further certify that I am in nowise interested in said claim, nor am I concerned in its prosecution. Witness my hand a official seal this 7th day of May, 1889. Frank W. STATE OF MICHIGAN, County of Kent, ss: In the matter of the claim for Jeremiah Kettle, father of Frederick S. Kettle late of Company "B" 6th Regiment Mich. Cav. Vols: Personally came before me, a Notary Public in and for aforesaid County and State, Charles F. Kettle, of the City of Grand Rapids in the County of Kent, State of Michigan reputable and entitled to credit; and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid claim as follows: My Post Office address is No. 390 First St., Grand Rapids, Mich. My age is 33 years. I hereby certify that I am a son of said Jeremiah Kettle and during the years 1863, 1864, and 1865 I lived at house with my father, Jeremiah Kettle and my own mother Lucy J. Kettle in the Township of Ravenna, Ottawa Co., Mich. I remember when my said brother Fredk. S. Kettle was home on a furlough from the war and the fact that he gave money to my father at that time to help support and maintain him and his family. And I also remember that while my said brother was away in the service of the war of the rebellion he sent money home to my father and mother to aid them in the support of the family. While he was away we were very poor and in need of his aid and assistance and he was a kind and dutiful son and brother. I was then a small boy and at home but I remember clearly these facts as we knew full well from bitter experience what it was to be poor. I further declare that I have no interest in said claim, and am not concerned in its prosecution. Signature of Affiant, Charles F. Kettle. Sworn to and subscribed before me this day by the above named affiant; and I certify that I read said affidavit to said affiant, and acquainted him with its contents before he executed the same. I further certify that I am in nowise interested in said claim, nor am I concerned in its prosecution. Witness my hand and official seal the 12th day of June, 1890. Signature, Frank W. Hine, Notary Public. ********************************************************************** June 23, 1890. Additional Evidence. CLAIM FOR Jeremiah Kettle father of Fredk. S. Kettle Late Co.
