Mrs. Eli Conant
Mary Barnes, daughter of H. LaMotte and Martha Barnes, was born June 12, 1861,
in Courtland and died Sept. 16 in Grand Rapids at the age of 55 years and two
months.  Aug. 17, 1878 she became the wife of Eli B. Conant and to them were
born nine children - five boys and four girls who, with the husband and father
and one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Reed of Grand Rapids, survive.
All her life has been spent in Courtland and the most of her married life upon
the farm where the family now reside.  She had been in failing health for some
months but the end came suddenly following an operation.  Shortly before her
death she made her peace with God and died sweetly trusting in his love and
saving power.
Always quiet and reserved she found her greatest pleasure in doing for others. 
She represented the highest type of wife, mother, friend and neighbor; her life
was wholly given to her family and the children and several grandchildren left
behind do truly rise up to call her blessed.
A large circle of friends join with the husband, children and grandchildren in
mourning for one whose passing leaves many hearts desolate but who we truly
believe has heard the Masters sweet "Well Done."  The funeral was held in the
Courtland church on Tuesday at 2:00 o'clock, Sept. 18, conducted by Rev. A. M.
Conklin of Rockford Baptist church.
