Aaron Konkle, one of the pioneers of the Grand River Valley and for half a century actively connected with the lumbering business of this city and county, died at his home in Caledonia Saturday night. He was 86 years of age. The funeral will be held at the home in Caledonia tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock and the interment will be in the Fulton Street cemetery at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. Konkle was born in Northampton county, Pennsylvania, September 24, 1820, the oldest son of Abraham and Catherine Konkle. In October, 1839, his parents purchased 190 acres of land in Palinfield, then known as Konkletown, where Aaron Konkle spent his youth and attended the common schools. At the age of 21 he engaged in lumbering at Mill Creek and in 1852 moved into Grand Rapids and opened a lumber yard in connection with his saw mill. In 1859 he resumed lumbering at the mouth of the Rouge river with his brother Robert, remaining until 1862 when he returned to this city and entered the employ of C.C. Comstock as foreman. In 1866 he went to Wayland, Allegan county, and lumbered for 18 months. He then purchased mill property at Grandville and manufactured handles until 1868, when he established a handle business in Caledonia, which he continued until about 15 years ago, when he retired. His business was the most important in Caledonia while he managed it, and employed from 20 to 25 hands. Celebrated Golden Wedding. Mr. Konkle was twice married. On June 11, 1844, he married Eliza, daughter of George W. Brooks of Grand Rapids. Two children were born of this marriage, Edna, who became the wife of Bradford H. Smithland, who is now living in Boston, and Caroline, who married William S. Emery of Grand Rapids. His second wife was Cynthia L. Wells, to whom he was married on the last day of 1904. Mrs. Konkle survives him. There were three children by the second marriage, Kittie E., who lives at home, and Jennie and Hattie, both of whom are dead. Franklin and Amos Konkle of this city are brothers of the deceased, and another brother, Timothy, lives near Hastings.
