"Dick" Myers Dies on Wedding Anniversary Andrew T. (Dick) Myers, 84 life long resident of Sparta, died yesterday morning on his sixty-first wedding anniversary, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Boone, 211 Hall st., SE. He had made his home with his daughter for the past few weeks. Mr. Myers was born on a farm in Alpine township. At the age of 15 years, he carried mail from Grand Rapids traveling on horseback thought the forests of Newaygo county. As a young man he gained a local reputation as a wrestler and the proprietor of the livery stable in Sparta he became interested in horses and was widely known in the vicinity as a judge of racers. In 5th infantry. Mr. Myers enlisted in the 5th Michigan Infantry during the Civil war, the outfit later being combined with the 3rd Michigan Infantry. Two of his brothers served in the Civil war, one dying in a southern prison at the close of the war. His father, Hiram Myers was one of the pioneers in the vicinity of Sparta. Mr. Myers was married on March 31, 1869 to Miss Harriet A. Calkins at Sparta. Besides the daughter, he is survived by a son, John Myers of Sparta, and four grandchildren, Clifford Myers of Grand Rapids, Gladys De French of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Myrtle Ostergarm of Muskegon and Mrs. Clyde Jenkins of South Bend Ind. Funeral services will be held at the daughters residence 211 Hall st., SE, at 1:30 and at the Baptist church in Sparta at 2:30. Burial will be in Myers cemetery at Sparta near the Myers farm. Second obit Rugged Sparta Pioneer Passes Among Last of War Veterans. Of seven sturdy brothers and four sisters but two remain, Eugene and Dan Myers, the last of a trio having passed away, Monday. Andrew T. better known as Dick to quaintnesses, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Boone of Grand Rapids. "Dick" is one of the very few survivors of Civil war service having served in the Michigan Third. "Dick" was born in Alpine, Sept. 6, 1845 and was almost 85 years of age. He had been in poor health for a number of months before his passing. He married to Harriet Calkins March 31, 1869 and his death occurred on the anniversaries of that event. Mrs. Myers died some years ago. He is survived by the daughter Mrs. Boone and a son, John, of Sparta and the brothers mentioned above, and four grandchildren. For many years Dick was in the livery business in Sparta and was a well known horse lover. The funeral was held at the daughter's home at 211 Hall St., Grand Rapids Wednesday and at the Baptist Church Sparta. Interment was in the Myers cemetery.
