The closing days of March have seen the passing away of another pioneer. Hiram Myers, father of Supervisor Henry Myers, died Monday after long, weary months of suffering form cancer, at his home across the river. Hiram Myers was one of Sparta township's most honored citizens, and his death has brought to a close a life of usefulness and success. Away back in the days of woods and swamps, somewhere in the forties, he left his native soil in Canada and turned his face toward the setting sun, hoping to better his fortune in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Lumbering was then the leading occupation of their settlers, and Mr. Myers ran a saw mill in the vicinity of Plainfield, cutting timber that grew on the bank of Rogue river. Later he removed to this township. He was the father of eleven children, seven of whom are now alive. Their funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the house. Many old friends who had been acquainted with the sterling worth of the dead came and listened in sadness to the words of Rev. L. W. Calkins, who delivered the funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the East Sparta cemetery, overlooking the waters of the Rogue, a beautiful and fitting spot for the long sleep of a good man.
