MCQUEEN This community was shocked and deeply saddened this week by the sudden death of one of its older and most highly esteemed citizens,, Edmon D. McQueen, 75, who passed away Monday morning at his home on East Main st. Mr. McQueen was a man of great activity until within recent months when his health began to fail. He had served on the Common Council, The Board of Education, as a member of the Board of Trade since its organization and was a life member of Lowell Masonic Lodge, No. 90, F & A M. Mr. McQueen was also a director of the State Savings Bank. He was long an enthusiastic sportsman and one of the founders of the Lowell Rod and Gun Club. Mr. McQueen was born June 29, 1863, at Simcoe, Ontario Canada and came to Lowell about 53 years ago. He conducted a livery statle and practised his profession as veterinarian for many years a the corner of Chatham and Broadway, which property he donated to the government for use as the site for the new post office now being erected. He later moved his livery stable to the corner of Broadway and Main and with the change of times converted it into a garage, which business he has since conducted with his son Bruce. Mr. McQueen was united in marriage with Mattie Perrin of Lowell who preceded him in death in 1924 and was laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Robert M. Barksdale officiating. Internment was in Oakwood cemetery. Surviving are two sons, Bruce of Lowell and Perrin of New York City, and a grandaughter, Marjorie. The passing of this fine man will be felt in many ways in the community. He was known as an honest and conscientious businessman and was always interested in civic enterprise, willing to do his share for a worthy cause. He will be missed by all who knew him. PETER J. FINEIS OF LOWELL DIES SUCCUMBS AFTER SUFFERING HEART ATTACK; ACTIVE IN OIL BUSINESS,SPORTS. Lowell, Oct 16. Peter J. Fineis, 52, for the last 24 years engaged in the oil business here and active in local civic and sport circles died Thursday night at this home shortly after suffering a heart attack while playing cards a the home of a friend. He was born in Westphalia township, Clinton Co., and came to Lowell 24 years ago. For many years he headed his own oil company, but recently had been a representative for another firm. Fineis was widely known in Kent county through his having spjonsored semi-pro baseball teams. He was an energetic worker in the annual Lowell ShowBoat presentations, performing as an end man in the cast. Surviving besides the widow are three sons, Irwin and Gerald, engaged in business with their father, and Robert. one brother, Frank Fineis of Portland, and a sister, Mrs. Ed Schaeffer of Lansing. Funeral Services will be held at the home at 1 p m Sunday with burial at Portland. LOWELL MOURNS PASSING OF ITS VETERAN SUPERVISOR LEWIS M. YEITER, for nearly 20 consecutive years supervisor of Lowell tp, passed away at his home, 318 Vergennes-rd. at about 1:30 p.m. this week Monday. He had been in falling health for the past year or two. Mr. Yeiter had been a life-long resident of this community and he leaves a wide circle of relatives and friends to mourn the passing of a well beloved citizen who had always been held in the highest esteem for his many fine qualities by all who knew him. Mr. Yeiter was born March 31, 1872 at the farm home of his parents, Jacob and Carolyn Yeiter in South Lowell tp, He attended the district schools and Lowell high school. On November 23, 1863(typo-should be 1893 I think), he was united in marriage with Nellie Kiel at the home of her parents in Lowell tp. They resided on the Yeiter farm for twenty-two years, moving to the present home on Vergennes rd. in December, 1915. Mr. Yeiter served this community as supervisor continuously from 1919 to 1938. During this period he served on every committee with the exception of finance. He also served on the school board for five or six years. Mr. Yeiter was a member of the order of Odd Fellows and the Lowell M. E. church. He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow Nellie, a daughter; Mrs. Ora Stuart of Freeport; a son, Lloyd of South Lowell; nine grandchildren, Betty Lou, Lorna June, Ralph Jr. and Dean Lewis Stuart; Marlon, Donald Lewis, Phyllis, Elaine and Elizabeth Yeiter; two brothers Fred of Garden City, Kansas; and Clarence of Grand Rapids; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Services this (Thursday) afternoon at 2.30 in the Methodist church with Rev. R.S. Miller officiating. Burial in Merriman cemetery. Business places were closed during the hour of the funeral services out of respect to Mr. Yeiter's memory. REV. RUSSELL H. BREADY Dr. Russell H. Bready, Methodist minister and former pastor of the Bloulevard Temple M. E. Church in Detroit, was found slain near his parsonage in Bainbridge, O Friday. Dr. Bready left Detroit in 1926. Charges of murdering Rev. Russell H. Bready, left, were lodged Saturday against the minister's son, Robert, 29, right. The son was declared to have confessed shooting his father, former Grand Rapids pastor and one-time mayor of Pontiac, in a scuffle Friday near the pastor's home in Bainbridge, Ohio. Obituary 1881-Mrs. Russell H. Bready-1938 Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bready, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emory A. Richards, was born in Saranac, Michigan, November 29, 1881 and departed this life from the Methodist Parsonage in Bainbridge, Ohio, July 19, 1938. She and Russell H. Bready were married in Trinity Methodist Espiscopal church, LOWELL WOMAN DIES IN AUTO ACCIDENT HUSBAND,PHYSICIAN AT HOSPITAL AS BODY ARRIVES LOWELL, April 6 1939 Mrs. Mable SHEPARD, 54, wife of Dr. B.H. Shepard of Lowell, was fatally injured Thursday morning when a car which she was driving crashed into a tree west of Lowell on M-21. Mrs. shepard was en route to join her husband at Blodgett hospital. She was pronouced dead shortly after arrival there. Dr. Shepard was preparing to perform an operation when she was brought in. He collapsed and was taken to his home in Lowell. Deputy Sherriff Frank STEPHENS said her car left the pavement and crashed head on into a large tree 14 feet from the north pavement. Mrs. Shepard was alone when the accident occurred. Mrs. Shepard had been prominent in civic affairs at Lowell for many years. Besides her husband, she is survived by on sister, Mrs Claude SCOVILLE of Clarksville; two brothers, Roy BLOUGH of Clarksville and Richard of Grand Ledge. Private funeral services will be held at the residence in Lowell at 3.30 Sunday. Burial will be in Clarksville cemetery. BERT E. QUICK,, ONCE RESIDENT HERE , DIES FORMER REVENUE AGENT PASSES FRIDAY IN LOWELL Bert E. Quick, former Grand Rapids advertising man and later a revenue agent here, died Friday at his home in Lowell, after a short illness. Mr. Quick who was 73 years old, lived in Grand Rapids from 1901 until his retirement in 1934. when he returned to Lowell, where he was born and where, before comeing to this city, he had been a merchant. He was the founder of one of the early advertising agencies here, and was credited with having written and placed the first four-page magazine advertisement in full color in the history of American advertising. Later he was recognized as an authority on estate and inheritance taxation, as well as income tax matters. He is survived by his wife; a son, Maurice R. Quick of Grand Rapids; two daughters, Miss Theodora Quick of Grand Rapids Junior college faculty, and Mrs. Irvin M. DAWSON of Denver, Col.. and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Roth's funeral chapel of Lowell. Burial will be in Lowell cemetery. LOWELL MORNS DEATH OF J. B. NICHOLSON The Grand Rapids Herald of this (thursday) morning, contained the following annoucement of the death of Mr. J. B. Nicholson, who was for many years an active and highly esteemed citizen of Lowell. Judd B. Nicholson 72, of 731 College ave, se, prominent Lowell and Grand Rapids business man before his retirement several years ago, died Wednesday afternoon after a long illness. Mr. Nicholson was for many years sales manager and part owner of the Lowell Specialty company before he withdrew from the firm more than ten years ago to become associated with the Michigan Life Insurance company at Grand Rapids. Prior to his association with the Lowell Specialty company, Mr. Nicholson was born in Oakland County,MI. He was a graduate of Northville high school and Michigan State Normal college at Ypsilanti. For many years he served as deacon at the Fountain Street Baptist church. He was a member of the De Molai commandery and Saladin temple. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Eleanor H. Nicholson; a son, Earl H. Nicholson of Radburn, N. J. and a daughter, Mrs. Clarence R. Straatsma of New Rochelle, N. Y. and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Fountain Street Bapist church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Graceland mausoleum (GR). MOURN PASSING OF JUDSON W. LYON The body of Judson W. Lyon of Rochester, N.Y. was brought here last Saturday afternoon and laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery. Mrs. Lyon and daughter Harriet, accompanying it to Grand Rapids where W. A. ROTH met their train and took charge of arrangements. A group of old time friends gathered at the chapel to express their sympathy and at the grave Rev. R. M. BARKSDALE offered a short prayer. Mrs. Lyon was Miss Donna WISNER, niece of Chas. Wisner, late accociate of F. T. KING in the King Milling Co. and earlier, with his brother, Mrs. Lyon's father, founder of the Wisner Mills. Mrs. Lyon spent her girlhood in Lowell, graduated with the L. H. S. Class of 1896 and then from Olivet college. Her husband spent some time with her in the Wisner home caring for her grandmother and uncle in their old age; he made many friends here and that time who held him as well as his wife, in highest esteem. A number of his relatives from Chicago, Muskegon and Coopersville and Mrs. Margaret Phelps of Marshall attened the short funeral service. Mrs. Lyon and daughter were guests of Miss Florence King in Grand Rapids until their return to Rochester on Monday evening. MRS. LAURA ALLEN FORCE PASSES IN CALIFORNIA Word was received by Lowell friends Tuesday of the passing of Mrs. Laura Allen Force, 85, wife of the late George Henry Force, on Tuesday of this week at the home of her son, Raymond C. Force in Piedmont, California. Mrs. Force was taken ill soon after reaching Piedmont, enroute to her home at Brentwood Heights after spending the summer in Michigan. While visiting in Lowell she was the guest of the Misses Katherine, Martha and Agnes PERRY. Funeral services were held this (Thursday) morning at the Wee Kirk of the Heather, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Calif. Mrs. Force is survived by two sons, Raymond and Harold W. Force. Mrs. Force was a resident of Lowell for many years during which time she made many lasting friendships. The sympathy of her large circle of friends is extended to the bereaved family. FORMER RESIDENT LAID TO REST HERE Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist church here for Mrs. Bertha ARCHIBALD, 69, of Grand Rapids, who passed away at her home there Monday afternoon. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Mrs. Archibald was the former Bertha HILDRETH of Lowell, daughter of the late Lester and Julia Hildreth, being born here and spending much of her lifetime in this locality. She had been a life long member of the Lowell Methodist church and sang in the choir there. She was also a member of the Woodman of the World. Surviving are her husband, Alfred G. Archibald; two daughters, Mrs. Claude HAVILAND, and Mrs. Harry GOLDSMITH of Grand Rapids; one sister, Mrs. C. B. TAYLOR of Traverse City and four grandsons. Arrangement by F. Earle Haner of Lowell. FRED SCOFIELD 69, lifelong resident of Grand Haven region, died Sunday at his home in Traverse city. Born at Williamsburg June 11, 1869, he long had been identified with the business progress of the region, being associated with the Hannah and Lay grist mill for 35 years. Thirteen years ago he purchased the Scofield Insurance agency. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William J. MIKULA of Traverse City, and a sister, Mrs. Laura Warner of Traverse City. Funeral at St. Francis church at 9 Wednesday. Burial in the Catholic cemetery at Oakwood. LAST RITES FOR BELOVED PASTOR Robert Spencer MILLER, paster of the First Methodist Espiscopal Church of Lowell, MI, suffered an apoplectic stroke at his cottage near Boyne City and passed away a few hours later on July 20, 1938. He was born in Indianapolis, Ind. on april 3, 1893, the son of William T. and Maria Louisa Miller. His youth was spent in Jackson, MI where he graduated from high school and was a member of the First Methodist Church. He attended Albion College, where he enrolled in the S.A.T.C. during the World War. and was a member of the forensic fraternity, Delta sigma Rho. He greaduated in 1919 from Albion College and three years later from Garrett Biblical Institute. He was also attened one summer at Drew Theological Seminary. One June 8, 1923 he united in marriage with Eunice F. SMITH of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Into their home were born two children, David in 1924 and Eunice in 1927. Robert S. Miller was recieved on trial in the Michigan Conference in 1915, ordained a deacon in 1918 and elder in 1921. After serving the Mosherville and Duplain-Greenbush charges in the Michigan Conference, he transerred to the Wisconsin Conference where he served a year at Oconomowoc and a year as associate pastor of the Grand Avenue Church in Milwaukee. Returning in 1924 to the Michigan Conference he served at Boyne City, Student Pastor at Albion, Gladwin, Greenwood Avenue Church in Jackson, Manistee, Central Church in Traverse City, and First Church in Lowell. He was chaplain of the Chas. W. Clark post of the American Legion and was a member of Lowell Masonic Lodge. The keynote of his life was creative activity. He was endowed with tremendous energy and a flood of creative ideas, which he followed with the enthusiasm of youth. In his leasure time he enjoyed working with his hands at his well equipped bench, producing object of beauty and utility. He loved to preach and to study, and the latest books were to be found in his library and the best magazines upon his study table. He enjoyed work with young people and the outstanding achievement of his pastorate at Lowell was the development of a strong Epworth League, which at his death held the silver cup of the Grand Rapids district. He gave twenty-three years to the work of the ministry. Words are inadequate to tell of the hearts comforted in sorrow and trouble and of the lives changed by his preaching and counsel. Let it be sufficient to say, he was a true minister of Jesus Christ. Funeral Services were held in the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Lowell at one o'clock, on Saturday afternoon, July 23, 1938. Rev. L. L. DEWEY, superintendent of the Grand Rapids District, offered read the Scriptures; and Rev. William H. HELRIGLE, Superintendent of the Grand Traverse District, offered prayer; and Rev. William C. PERDEW of First Church, Kalamazoo, spoke briefly. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery in Jackson and the committal services were conducted by Rev. Fredrick Spence of First Chuch Jackson and Rev. Lloyd NIXON, superintendent of the Albion-Lansing district. The following ministers acted as pall bearers: Stanley Buck, Morris McKean, Stanley Niles, Albert Pellowe, W. F. Kendrick, and E. A. Armstrong. About 20 other ministers were present, who acted as honorary pall bearers. In addition to his wife and children he is survived by a sister, Miss Josephine Miller of Jackson. ZEONA G. MATIE COURT Mrs. Matie Court was born in Lowell area on September 18, 1892. Her childhood (as Matie Gould) was spent in the Lowell area and she married Oscar Rivette , a Pere Marquette Station Agent. Two Children were born to this marriage, Gould Rivette and Zeona McInerny (of Canada), before Mr. Rivette died in an accident. Mrs. Rivette continued to operate a boarding house for Lowell teachers. This supplied the needs of her family. Some years later she married Mr. Lawrence Court, a Produce Broker with the Canadian Banana Company. They subsequently moved to Canada where he worked until retirement in 1958. While in Canada, they joined St. Andrews United Church of Canada in W. Montreal, Quebec. Following retirement in 1958 they moved to their home on N. Jefferson Street here in Lowell. For many years in their retirement they were faithful attenders of worship on Sunday Morning at the Lowell United Methodist Church. Mrs. Court has been characterized by her neighbors as one who loved her home, visited and cared for others in need and who often took food in to places of need. "She was a good neighbor and ready to help when needed." RIVETTE/THOMAS July 18,1989 Ethal Anne Rivette of 421 Washington, Lowell passed away Tuesday, July 18, 1989, at Blodgett Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 71. Ethel Anne was born November 25, 1917 in Lowell; the younger daughter of Earl and Della (Winegar) Thomas. She began teaching Remedial Reading in the Lansing area during World War II. On April 18, 1943, she married another local favorite, Gould O. Rivette, son of Oscar and Matie (Gould) Rivette. Mrs Rivette took great pride in having taught hundreds of children to read, both in Belleville and Lowell Public Schools from 1962 to 1980. She was actively involved in the Methodist Church, the Lowell Community and the lives of her family. She is survived by her husband, Gould O. of Lowell, two daughters, Mary Del Daniels of Leonard, and Jane Anne Rivette of Boulder Co; one son, William D. Bennett Jr. of Sand Lake; three grandchildren; Rosmond, Jacob and Amanda(Bennett), her sister, Mrs. James (Dora Jane) Cook Sr.; nephew, James B. Cook Jr. Funeral Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Lowell, 621 E. Main St. at 2 p.m. Sunday internment Oakwood Cemetery. The family will meet with friends Saturday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Methodist Church of Lowell Memorial Fund.
