A 3-year-old Sand Lake child was killed Thursday when a pickup driven by her grandmother skidded off U. S. 131 near Cedar Springs, throwing two children and two adults from the vehicle, state police said. Brandy sue Russell was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:40 p.m. accident, said Kurt Erke, a state trooper. None of the occupants was wearing a seat belt, state police said. State law requires that children aged 4 and under riding in the front seat be in a child-restraint seat. The driver, Susan Russell of 9101 21 Mile Road NE, was traveling north when she lost control of the 1990 Dodge Dakota pickup on the snow-slickened overpass for White Creek Avenue. As the car spun out of control, the occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Russell, 42; Kristi Russell, 5; and 24-year-old Wendy Lang, the mother of the children, were treated at Butterworth Hospital for minor injuries. Debbie Cook, who lives across the street for the family, said Brandy was an outgoing child. "They were all sweet little kids she said. "She was always hollerin across the road if she'd see you an she'd call you by name, too.
