Joseph was the fourth of his parents’ eight children. Joseph’s first wife was Theresa Neuman (January 30, 1872-August 11, 1907), the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Elyer) Neuman, who were German immigrants. Joseph and Theresa had one daughter, Marian Elizabeth Wernette, who married Edward Albert Rohloff. Theresa, Joseph’s first wife, died in 1907, and in 1913 Joseph married Florence “Flossie” Culbert (January 20, 1887 - November 17, 1957), daughter of Thomas W. and Mary E. (Patterson) Culbert. Joseph and Flossie had two daughters: Margaret Florence and Helen Jane Wernette. Joseph’s first wife Theresa (Neuman) Wernette is buried with him in the Mount Calvary Cemetery. Joseph’s second wife Florence (Culbert) Wernette is buried in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
