Enlisted at Pittsburg, Pa. in US Army as musician Oct. 20, 1854. Served on the frontiers of Washington and Oregon Territories for 6 years fighting Indians. Was discharged at Vancouver Aug. 20, 1861; re-enlisted the same day in the war of the Rebellion, 1861. Was under McClellan, Burnside and Mead in 9 of the hardest fought battles, and many otheres. Discharged for disability at Phil. Pa. Dec. 30, 1863.
