CLIFF CATHOLIC CEMETERY

PHOENIX

KEWEENAW COUNTY, MICHIGAN

Located on US 41 North between Mohawk and Phoenix on the west side of the road. There is a footpath leading back into the woods for about 100 feet. The markers are scattered about. The church foundation is at the southwest corner of the burial areas as a low stone wall, much of it crumbling away. The church was moved to the corner of US 41 and the road that leads into Eagle River (a few hundred feet further north). The church is now a museum, open to the public.

These are the transcriptions of the remaining stones:

Margaret Wagner wife of Nickolaus Gassmann. Born May 28 1838. Died October 1871.

(Written in German) Catherina Ballinger nee Wagner. Born Luxembourg Europa on Sept 12, 1836. Died at Lake Superior on August 12, 1866.

Cornelius Harrington born at Baerhaven, County Cork. 17 years.

(broken stone, no name) died 6 December, 1865. 36 years 3 months 6 days. Born in Baerhaven, County Cork, Ireland.

(fenced in by iron fence) Charles, son of J & B McCarthy. Died March 6, 1866. 19 years 9 months

John, son of J & B McCarthy. Died June 6, 1864.  4 years 6 months.

(stone buried face up) George P. son of P & S Stroh. Died November 1873.

Bridget, wife of Peter Riley. Died December 26, 1881. 59 years. Born Waterford County, Ireland.

Elizabeth daughter of J & M Steffes. Born October 30, 1866. Died February 2, 1869.

(metal pipes in shape of cross with name engraved in plate). Jos Schick 1884.

Amanda daughter of P & S Kremer. Born December 21, 1874. Died March 31, 1887.

Anna Bakbemer  Born 21 Mai 1857. Died 8 September 1863.

(German) Sophie wife of Peter Kremer Died 23 October 1879. 46 years.

(German) Joseph Kremer  Jul 29 1869- October 19 1889.

(picket fence. Artificial flowers decorate the grave) Maria wife of J Engels  Born November 19, 1857. Died August 1879.

(German) Joseph Long  Born Jun 29, 1821. Died June 1882.
