Myron Berry
HUBBELL ? Myron Berry, 87, of Hubbell, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at 
Portage Hospital where he was a patient for the past three days.

Myron Garland Berry was born May 24, 1919, in Franklin, N.H., the only child of 
Myron E. and Leona Berry. 

Myron graduated as Valedictorian from Tilton boys? School in 1936, received a 
bachelor?s of arts degree from Colby College in 1940, a master?s of science 
degree from Harvard University in 1942 and a PhD from Syracuse University in 
1951.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colby and was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma 
Honor Chemistry Fraternity at Harvard and the Sigma Chi Honor Research 
Fraternity at Syracuse.

He was made a member of the Michigan Tech University Academy of Science and 
Arts in 1996.

Myron taught at Harvard, Urbana and Ohio Wesleyan prior to accepting a position 
in the chemistry department at the Michigan School of Mines in 1955 as a 
tenured professor.

From 1960 to 1980, Myron was in charge of the freshman chemistry program, prior 
to retiring in 1984.

He was awarded the Distinguished Teacher and the Clair Donovan Awards.

Myron married Betty Marie Dye on June 26, 1948, in Parkersburg, W.Va. who 
predeceased him.

They had three sons, Myron Henry (Diane) of Iron Mountain, John (Scarlet) of 
Lake Linden and George (Christian) of West St. Paul; and 10 grandchildren.

He was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild in December. 

Myron became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity in 1937 and was 
instrumental in establishing the MTU Chapter in 1979.

He was active with Michigan Tech Little Theater and was on the TKE Board of 
Directors.

Myron and Betty were charter members of the Houghton County Historical Society 
and they were awarded the George Graham Memorial Award in 1996. Myron was an 
Emeritus Trustee of the museum.

Myron joined the Houghton Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in 1961 and served 
as Worshipper Master several times.

He was a member of Royal Arch, Scottish Rite and the Ahmed Temple of Shrine.

He helped organize the Friendship Chapter Order of DeMoley and served as Dad 
Advisor.

He was a past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star.

He was awarded the DeMoley Legion of Honor in 1972, and was awarded the 
Honorary 33 of Scottish Rite Masons in 1991 for contributions to the craft.

In 1973, Myron and Betty bought the Keweenaw Agate Shop in Copper Harbor and 
ran it each summer with their family until 1988.

They were active members of the Copper Harbor Improvement Association and 
continued to summer there.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 2, 2006, at 10 a.m. at the 
Christ Episcopal Church in Calumet, Pastor Philip Nancarrow will officiate and 
burial will be in the Copper Harbor Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Plowe Funeral Home.

A graveside service for Myron will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Copper 
Harbor Cemetery.
