Whenever or whatever needed to be done in the county you could find the fine touch of Norma Russell in the final product. Sheriff Hilt's remembers playing baseball for the team Norma and her husband Howard coached. Others related stories of ice fishing with Norma, or of Norma at the piano at one event or another. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 9 at the Baldwin Congregational Church with Rev. Bernard Fetty officiating. The Church overflowed with those who came to pay their final respects to Norma. Several hundred attended the service. Norma P. Russell, age 71 of Baldwin, died unexpectedly on April 4, 1996 at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. Norma Trucks was born on May 25, 1924 in Baldwin to Ray and Lerene (MacLeod) Trucks, where she grew up and attended school. She was a graduate of Baldwin High School. She married H. Howard Russell on June 7, 1944 and he preceded her in death on December 1, 1976. Norma was a lifelong area resident. While still in high school, Norma went to work for her father Ray Trucks at the Lake County Abstract Company in Baldwin which was established in 1913. Following graduation, Norma attended Ferris Institute until WWII, when she joined the Women's Air Service Patrol (WASPs) as a pilot. Following her military service, she rejoined the firm, taking over upon her father's death in the 1960's. Norma was a very active and tireless worker for the community. Among the many groups and organizations to which se belonged are: the Baldwin Women's Club, the Civil Air patrol, the Baldwin Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Peacock Post 5315 V.F.W., Chairwomen of the Wenger Pavilion Committee and Sounds of the Forest, the Baldwin School Board, the Troutarama Committee, and a Director of Lake-Osceola State Bank. She also was an accomplished musician and passed along that talent to her children and grandchildren, several of which are members of the Scottville Clown Band. Norma is survived by four sons; Greg (Judith) Russell of Vicksburg, MI; Gary (Robin) Russell of Chesterfield, MI; Scott (Debbie) Russell of Baldwin; and Jac (Mary) Russell of Ludington; on daughter Lee Ann (Abe) Russell of Baldwin; and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents and husband, by a daughter Kay Lynn Russell; two sisters Beth Tripp and Olga McClellan; and a brother Ford Trucks. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Scottville Clown Band or the Sounds of the Forest Committee or the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements were handled by Vida Funeral home and donation envelopes may be obtained there.
