Visitation will be held Friday, July 15, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Saturday, July 16, 2005, at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. James Tozer officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire. A complete obituary will follow in Friday's edition of the Record-Eagle. -Russell David VanHouzen ------------------------------------------------------------ Died July 12, 2005 EMPIRE - Russell David VanHouzen, 83, of Empire went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at Munson Medical Center, with his family at his side. Russell was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Detroit, to Cornelius and Cornelia (Hartman) VanHouzen. On Aug. 16, 1941, Russell married his loving sweetheart, Margaret "Peggy" Alspaugh, and raised their family in Detroit. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Russell started his own business as a painting contractor. Russell and Peggy moved to the northern Michigan area in 1976. Russell was a world famous bird carver. He was a member of the NW MI Decoy Club. He enjoyed fishing and loved God's creation, and through his carving he captured this love. Russ was also a very active member of the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church. Russ was a wonderful husband and father, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. Along with Peggy, his wife of 63 years, Russell is survived by three sons, Dale (Mae) VanHouzen of Glen Lake, Michael (Mary Ann) VanHouzen of Holland and Russell (Susan) VanHouzen of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren, Wade, Scott, Kurt, Aren, Nicole, Nathan, Jenny, Jessica, Jamie, Jeffery and Brittany; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler, Cameron, Courtney, Devon, Riley, Isabella, Madeline and Natalie. Russell is also survived by two brothers, Martin (Harriet) VanHouzen of Glen Lake and Leroy (Lynn) VanHouzen of Fraser; his sister, Johanna Moses of Fraser; and his daughter-in-law, Karen VanHouzen. Russell was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Cornelia "Cora" Vroom and Ruth VanWingerden; and his son, Thomas. Visitation will be held Friday, July 15, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Saturday, July 16, 2005, at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Dr. James Tozer officiating.
