Cochran passed peacefully on Wednesday surrounded by his wife and children. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, community and civic leader, and educator (in the truest sense), bringing wisdom, joy, and integrity to everyone he touched. Phil and his parents moved to Hinsdale, Ill. from LeRoy, N.Y. in 1933 and remained there until his retirement in 1982 when he moved to Glen Arbor. In Hinsdale, Phil was a 15-year member of the Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church, President of the Hinsdale Community House, a member of the Plan Commission of Hinsdale, and founding President of the Veterans' Civic Association, later becoming The Committee of One Hundred, a co-founder and Director of the Graue Mill Historical Museum, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Hinsdale Golf Club. In Chicago, Mr. Cochran was President of The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind, President of United Charities of Chicago, a Director of the Chicago Chapter of the American Red Cross, Vice-President of the Economic Club of Chicago, Vice-President of the University Club of Chicago, a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, and a Life Trustee of George Williams College. Mr. Cochran's entire business career was spent with what had originally been W. A. Alexander & Co., at the time Chicago's largest insurance brokerage concern, which later became Corroon and Black Corporation. Mr. Cochran started as a mail clerk and rose to become Chairman and CEO. Concurrently, he served as Senior Vice-President and a member of the Board of Directors of Corroon and Black Corporation of New York and served on its Executive Committee. He was President of the National Association of Casualty and Surety Agents, and a Director of Automatic Screw Machine Products Co., Chicago and Decatur, Ala., Clark Equipment Company, Niles, and Del Webb Corporation, Phoenix, Ariz. Mr. Cochran was a graduate of Williams College and Secretary of the Class of 1938. In the Traverse City area, Mr. Cochran was President of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, President of the Economic Club of Traverse City, President of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, and founding Chairman of the International Affairs Forum. He was a member of the Corporate Board of Munson Medical Center and of the Foundation Board of Northwestern Michigan College. He was a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals of Glen Arbor Township. He was a Trustee at The Leelanau School for over 20 years, a part-time teacher and was its Chairman Emeritus and a Life Trustee. During World War II, he served in the Second Marine Division in the Guadalcanal campaign, later serving on the staff of the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and as an instructor at the Marine Corps School in Quantico, Va. He retired from the Marine Corps with the rank of Major. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Grace Clement Newcomb; four children, Philip Lee Cochran, Jr., George Newcomb Cochran, Corinne Cochran and Annabel Cochran Moore; a son-in-law, Robert Joseph Moore; two daughters-in- law, Eileen Laferty Cochran and Barbara Doepke Cochran; 12 grandchildren, Philip Lee Cochran III, Courtney Cochran, Kelsey Ann Cochran, Brooks Benton Cochran, Matthew Drake Cochran, Andrew Chapin Cochran, Peter Austin Moore, Taylor Cochran Moore, Charles Frederick Cochran, Samuel Thorpe Cochran, Haley Moore, and Melissa Moore; four "granddogs," Cecil, Iris Rose, Chloe, and Guinness; and countless wonderful friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Student Center of The Leelanau School, Glen Arbor.
