Bob was born in Suttons Bay on Nov. 6, 1923, to Carl and Lena (Bahle) Garthe. He was a graduate of Central Michigan University and then served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Bob married the former Elna Greenan in Empire on April 15, 1950. Bob made his living as an educator, formerly teaching math and science over a 30-year career. He taught in Empire, Honor, Glen Arbor and Glen Lake, and was affectionately known by his students as Mr. G. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, and he was an avid birdwatcher. He and Elna traveled extensively, and especially enjoyed their month-long trip to Alaska. Bob took an active role in his community and served as trustee on the Glen Arbor Township Board, and as a volunteer on the Glen Arbor Fire and Rescue Squad. Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elna of Glen Arbor; his four children, Gail (Blaine) Bonnell of Scottville, Jeannine (Joe) Wambold of Gaylord, Robert James Garthe Jr. of Empire and Robin (Richard) Cape of Beulah; four grandchildren, Jade and Jessie Wambold and Stephanie and Corey Scott; his sister, Marilyn Klinefelter of Suttons Bay; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, Carlton, Stanley, Ray and Arnold; and his sisters, Laurel and Dorothy. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Suttons Bay Congregational Church, with the Rev. James H. Beadle officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire.
