Burry, 92, of Glen Arbor died Thursday at Tendercare of Traverse City, from complications of a stroke. Born Nov. 10, 1910, in Maple City, she was the daughter of Richard and Sophie (Dechow) Cluff. Leona was a 1928 graduate of Traverse City High School, attended Ferris College, and received her teaching certificate from County Normal. She then taught in the one-room schoolhouse in Bingham. On Oct. 22, 1937, in Grand Rapids, she married Clarence L. Burry, who preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 2001. Leona and Clarence owned and operated Burry's Dining Room in Cedar for 27 years. Following retirement from the restaurant, they moved to Glen Arbor. She had been a member of Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, the church Women's Guild and the Glen Lake Women's Club. Leona is survived by her son, Don (Peggy) Burry of Royal Oak; two daughters, Marcia (Fred) Gauthier of Glen Arbor, and Lori (Ron) Novak of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Renee (Rick) VanDaal of Oakland, Julie (Rob) Mueller of Troy, Kevin Gauthier of Oscoda, Norman (Peggy) Gauthier of Cedar, Kyle Novak and Carlee Novak, both of Traverse City; four great-grandsons, Michael and Nicholas VanDaal and Drew and Will Gauthier; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Sophie Watson. Leona was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Kucera; and two brothers, Leon and Richard Cluff. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Glen Lake Community Reformed Church on Monday at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Stephen Wing will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to either the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church or the Glen Lake Women's Club.
