Johnson Died September 11, 2000 EMPIRE - Frances B. Johnson, 87, of Empire, died Monday at her niece Beverly Shea's home in Melrose, Fla. A homemaker, Mrs. Johnson had resided for over 60 years in her beloved town of Empire. She jointly created the Paul T. and Frances B. Johnson Scholarship Program for Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Benzie counties. She was a supporter of the 4-H Programs in Empire, Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, the Moffitt Cancer Research Center in Tampa, Fla., and The Empire Historical Society. She was a Past Worthy Matron Eastern Star in Empire many times. Mrs. Johnson was a member and supporter of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church her entire lifetime in Empire. She was known for her kindness, generosity and loving personality. Survivors include brothers, Theodore "Ted" Brey of Myrtle Creek, Ore., and Robert Brey of Milwaukee, Wis.; sisters, Julie Budz of Des Plaines, Ill., Sophie Polich of Caspian, Mich., Florence Michelwicz of Chicago, Ill., and Eleanor J. Anderson of Canton, Mich.; and niece, Beverly Shea of Melrose. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul. T. Johnson, her brother, Col. A.J. Brey, and her sister, Alice Schot. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church where a Rosary/Prayer Vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. A reception luncheon will be held at the church following burial at Empire Maple Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. ---------------------------------------- Paul T.
