He was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Grand Rapids, to Bernhardt and Mabel (Taylor) Kuerth. Carl served in the United States Army during World War II and was decorated with the Bronze Star. Retiring from the Scott Paper Company after 33 years of service, he was a member of Empire United Methodist Church, the American Legion and a life-time member of the VFW. In his earlier years, he enjoyed bowling, golf, boating, camping, hunting and traveling. Reading was a life-long passion. Carl is survived by his wife of 64 years, Melva; son, James and his wife, Joan (Rochester) Kuerth, their children, Shane Kuerth and Stephanie Owens and great- grandson, Bradley Owens, all of Seneca, S.C.; daughter, Lynda (Geoffrey) Buitendorp and their daughters, Erin, Shawn and Claire Buitendorp, and Kelly Kilbride, all of Grand Ledge; brothers, Harold and Richard Kuerth; sisters, Marjorie Derflinger and Helen Norton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home in Grand Ledge on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at noon until the time of funeral services at 2 p.m. The Rev. William "Bill" Amundsen will officiate. VFW military honors will follow at the funeral home. Interment will take place later at Maple Grove Cemetery in Leelanau County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Empire United Methodist Church, 10050 Michigan St., PO Box 261, Empire, MI 49630.
