He was born Sept. 17, 1924 in Detroit, the son of Charles Cummins and Mary (Mulhall) McMillan. On Sept. 9, 1961 in Detroit, he married the former Gladys Sharp, who survives. Mr. McMillan graduated from Detroit Northern High School in 1942, and earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with highest honors from the University of Detroit in 1946. Following a short teaching position at the Lawrence Institute of Technology, he pursued a career in Detroit, Farmington Hills and Port Huron as a sales manager of industrial equipment. Charles and Gladys were members of the Ward Presbyterian Church of Livonia. Charles and his family were summer residents of Empire beginning in 1970. Upon his retirement in 1993, he and Gladys moved to Empire. He was a member of the Empire Planning Commission, the Empire Lions Club and the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church. Charlie was an avid golfer with one career hole-in-one on the sixth hole at Glenhurst Golf Course in Detroit. He enjoyed the time he spent with his family, as well as sketching and pottery. In addition to his wife, Gladys, he is survived by his son, John McMillan of Empire and Arlington, Va.; daughter, Kathy McMillan of New York City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald McMillan. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. The Rev. L. Edward Davis will officiate. Spring burial will be in Empire Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church or the Empire Fire and Rescue Squad. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
