Arrangements are pending at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. ---------------------------- TRAVERSE CITY RECORD EAGLE - 26 Feb. 2002 **PHOTO** Katherine Else Stearns Died February 24, 2002 GLEN ARBOR - Katherine Else Stearns, 96, of Glen Arbor, passed away on Sunday at the Maple Valley Nursing Home. She was born on Dec. 24, 1905, in Buckley, the daughter of William Monroe and Tracie Ann (Guger) Williams. She was married to Verlin Glen Stearns in 1923. Katherine was a member of the Glen Lake Reformed Church, and a life member of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the White Schrine, she was with the Commission on Aging, a volunteer for the R.S.V.P. and a past member of the Glen Lake Women's Club. She built the first beauty salon in Glen Arbor in 1949. Katherine retired as a cosmetologist after working fifty years. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Swierad and son-in-law, Theodore Swierad; daughter-in-law, Mrs. James (Betty) Stearns of Hartford, Ark.; seven grandchildren, Mrs. Thomas (Christie) Schlosser of Fairfield, Calif., Mark Swierad of Orlando, Fla., Terry Stearns of Hartford, Ark., Verlin (Theresa) Stearns of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mrs. (Steve) Deborah Walker of Arkansas, Mrs. Michael (Cindy) Warren of Fort Smith, Ark., and Mrs. (Michael Meta) Robinson of Boca Raton, Fla. She also had 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was well known in the community as "Gram." Katherine was the youngest of five children, brothers, Earl Williams and John Williams; sisters, Eva Manchester and Rose Fearnley, who all preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her beloved son, James Stearns, beloved grandson, Joel Scott Swierad; and her husband, Verlin. At her request cremation has taken place. She will be missed by many, she gave a lot of love and received many prayers and blessings from her family and friends. Katherine spent the last twelve months of her 96 years with her friends and staff at the Maple Valley Nursing Home, where she was very happy and contented. A service of remembrance will be held at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday at the Glen Lake Reformed Church in Burdickville. Lunch will be served immediately following the service. Memorials may be directed to Glen Lake Reformed Church, 4902 West MacFarlane Road, Glen Arbor, MI 49636 and Maple Valley Nursing Home, 1086 W. Burdickville, Maple City, MI 49664.
