Witler 06/03/2004 William R. "Bill" Witler, a retired business executive, died May 16, 2004, after a brief illness at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz. He was 87 and formerly lived in St. Louis. Mr. Witler was born in St. Louis. He earned a bachelor's degree in business from Washington University in 1939. Mr. Witler was active as a cheerleader for the university, a member of the baseball team and was a member of Beta Theta Phi National Fraternity. After graduation, Mr. Witler began his career at Fru-Con Construction Corp., an engineering and construction firm for the health care and food and beverage markets. In 1945, he went to work for the former Tobey Fine Paper Co. of St. Louis, where he became company president in the early 1970s. He retired in 1980. Mr. Witler was a former member of the Webster Groves School Board. He was a longtime member of Sunset Country Club. Mr. Witler was an avid golfer and was a seasonal resident of Glen Lake, Mich., and Green Valley, Ariz. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. June 12 at the Glen Arbor Community Reformed Church, 4902 West MacFarland Road in Glen Arbor, Mich. A memorial service was held May 19 in Tucson, Ariz. Burial will be private. Among the survivors are his wife of 62 years, Elva Hassendeubel Witler; two daughters, Susan Vevang of Chicago and Betsy Bosin of Bloomington, Ind.; a son, Bill Witler Jr. of Cleveland; a sister, Rose Remmers of Arlington Heights, Ill.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 500 North Dearborn, Suite 305, Chicago, Ill. 60610; or the American Heart Association, 5455 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43214. ------------------------------------------- Green Valley News & Sun William Robert Witler, of St. Louis, Mo., Glen Lake Mich., and Green Valley, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 16, 2004, in Tucson. Born in St. Louis on June 7, 1916, Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elva Hassendeubel Witler; their children Susan (Curt) Vevang of Chicago, Ill., Betsy (Tal) Bosin of Bloomington, Ind., and Bill Jr. (Rita) of Cleveland, Ohio; six grandchildren: Jenny (Ron) Scheetz, Katy (Mark) Stoffel, Sara (Mark) Fink, Catherine Bosin, Erika Witler, Jason Witler; and six great-grandchildren. Bill was a graduate of Cleveland High School (1934) and Washington University (1939), and was an executive and principal of Tobey Fine Papers Inc. of St. Louis and Kansas City. A seasonal resident of Glen Lake, Mich., and Green Valley, he actively pursued his lifelong interest in golf. He will be remembered as an avid sports enthusiast, an engaging conversationalist and avid storyteller.
