Born July 10, 1932, in Springfield, Mo., he was the son of Lester and Frances (Camp) Cheek. While in the service and stationed at Empire Air Base in Empire, he met and fell in love with the former Alice Ashmore, and they were married on Nov. 3, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City. A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Cheek served his country honorably with the United States Air Force. He was employed by the Traverse City Regional State Hospital for several years before joining Michigan Bell Telephone Company, retiring as an engineer in 1982. Together with his wife, Alice, they owned and operated the Weathervane Antique Shop in Glen Arbor for a number of years. Mr. Cheek was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the northern Michigan outdoors. Some of his happiest moments were spent fishing with his wife on Glen Lake. He also enjoyed Glen Lake High School sports and "worked the chains" at many varsity football games. The greatest joy in Mr. Cheek's life was his family and he was never happier than when his house was full of his visiting children and their families. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Along with his wife and best friend, Alice, he is also survived by his children, Donna (Kim) Hillard of Burdickville, Robert Cheek of Burdickville, Beth (Roger) Noonan of Maple City, Cynthia (William) Holbrook of Chicago, and Martha (William) McCort of Lake Ann; eight grandchildren; a great- granddaughter; his wife's loving brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews; and his sister, Mary Korch of Smyrna, Ga. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, William. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery on Sunday, July 8 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen Wing officiating. Graveside military honors will be under the auspices of VFW Cherryland Post 2780. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice or the American Diabetes Association. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. -------------------------------------------- U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca.1775-2006 Name: Donald Lester Cheek Service Info.: A1C US AIR FORCE KOREA Birth Date: 10 Jul 1932 Death Date: 5 Jul 2001 Cemetery: Rosehill Cemetery Cemetery Address: Kasson Townshhip Maple City, MI 49664 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/leelanau/photos/tombstones/rosehill/cheek102822gph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/ File size: 4.5 Kb
