Gilbert Died January 25, 2004 TRAVERSE CITY - Lurah E. Gilbert, 99, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born Feb. 6, 1904, in Kasson Township, Leelanau County, she was the daughter of Preston J. and Margaret C. (Spafford) Dewing. On March 25, 1929, in Flint, she married Herald R. Gilbert, who preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1966, in DeLand, Fla. Lurah attended Empire High School for three years, but her father wanted her to graduate from an accredited school, so she attended her senior year at Traverse City High School and graduated in 1921. She then attended Western State Normal School in Kalamazoo and graduated in 1924 with a teacher's certificate. Lurah was a very intelligent woman. She taught junior high grades for one year at Boyne City and three years at Kasson Center School. Lurah's married life was spent in farming in Kasson Township. Her love was growing vegetables and flowers and selling produce and melons around Glen Lake and at her farm with her husband. She also enjoyed being an election inspector for many years in Kasson Twp. Upon her husband's death, she moved to Traverse City, where she was active in the Grange, Rose Hill Cemetery Association and the Betsie River Yard and Garden Club. She was also a volunteer with Munson Auxiliary for 27 years and was honored on Oct. 14, 1993, for completing 11,000 hours of volunteer work at the hospital. She was a giving and loving lady and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Lurah is survived by her nieces, Grace (Jim) Woodrow of Traverse City, Nancy (John) Lanham of Maple City and Marie Gilbert of Virginia Beach, Va.; nephews Don (Ruth) Gilbert of Phoenix Ariz., Duane (Mary) Newman of Maple City and Larry Gilbert of Ann Arbor; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Dudley, in infancy; two brothers, Paul and Henry Dewing; and a sister, Mary P. Paine. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City this evening, Jan. 27, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Marvin Rosa will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Kasson Township. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Medical Center Auxiliary or Rose Hill Cemetery Perpetual Care fund.
