He was born in Traverse City on April 2, 1949, the first of seven children to Raymond John Hulbert Sr. and Dela Elberta (Thompson) Hulbert. He was raised on the family farm in Kasson Township near Maple City. A charming little boy who early on had a zest for life, John inevitably found himself buried knee-high in mischief, as evidenced by the many stories of his exploits as a child. He grew into manhood with a free spirit and a love for the beauty and majesty of nature. He recognized there was a great big world out there with lots to see, and resolved to see as much if it as he could. John's different occupations over the years allowed him the freedom to see much of the country. However it was his last profession, as a cross-country truck driver, that afforded him the greatest opportunity to see all he hadn't yet seen. It was this job he loved the most. John had always wanted to drive a rig and so he worked hard to make that dream a reality and was enjoying the fruits of his labor. John leaves behind scores of friends and family, who will carry him in their hearts with a million memories, some poignant, but most funny and heartwarming. He is survived by his children, Ms. Dawn Jeanette (Hulbert) Beasley of Pensacola, Fla., and her children, Alexander John Beasley, Erica Kaia Beasley, Nicolas Jeffery Beasley and Danielle Marie Beasley; Mr. Richard John Hulbert of Orlando, Fla., and his children, Christopher David Hulbert and Cynthia Michelle Hulbert; Ms. Julie Ellen Hulbert of Orlando and her children, Cody James Kimbel and Savannah Renee Yarbrough; and Ms. Jennifer Marie Evans of Grand Rapids; his mother, Ms. Dela Elberta (Thompson) Hulbert of Southfield; his brothers, Richard (Regina) Hulbert and Rodney (Amy) Hulbert, both of Maple City; his sisters, Ronda (Hulbert) Wing of Southfield and Robin (Hulbert) Jackson of Maple City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his father, Raymond John Hulbert Sr.; and his brothers, Ronald James Hulbert and Roger Jeffrey Hulbert. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Kasson Township.
