Noonan, Jr. Died November 27, 2000 MAPLE CITY - Charles S. Noonan, Jr., 84, of Maple City, died Monday. Born Sept. 7, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of Charles S. and Lula (Ashmore) Noonan, Sr. On April 15, 1942, in Tonawanda, NY, he married the former Alice M. Schmidt. Charles was a machine operator while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war he worked with the Civilian Conservation Core planting trees and he was a crew leader. Charles also delivered appliances for Max's Service. He drove the sander in the winter and repaired roads in the summer for Leelanau County Road Commission. Charles enjoyed fishing and was an avid gardener in his younger years. He loved the outdoors and going for daily walks. Survivors include two sons, Timothy L. (Deanna) Noonan of Interlochen and Allan K. (Carol) Noonan of Empire; one brother, Glen (Ella) Noonan, Sr. of Maple City; four sisters, Muriel (Andy Sr.) Baetz of Maple City, Ethel Furst of Ludington, Cynthia Monroe of Traverse City and Lucy Petelle of Massachusetts. He is also survived by six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and step- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice M. Noonan, who died on July 2, 1990; three brothers, Franklin, Carl and Garnet; and two sisters, Doris and Erma. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rosehill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Arthritis Association.
