Stachnik, 71, a lifelong resident of Maple City, died Friday morning, Jan. 9, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born on March 21, 1932, in Traverse City, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Skellet) Stachnik. On Aug. 30, 1952, at Maple City Community Church, he married the former Opal VanHorn, who survives. Don had been employed by the Leelanau County Road Commission, retiring in 1991, after 36? years of dedicated service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and gardening. He will be fondly remembered for his quiet spirit and his loving devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren. Don will be greatly missed. Along with his wife, Opal, Don is survived by his four children, Bob (Judy) Stachnik of Cedar, Ron (Catrina) Stachnik of Beulah, Donna Sadler of Maple City, and Renee (Gary) Childers of Lake Ann; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Violet) Stachnik and Darwin (Maxine) Stachnik, all of Maple City; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, in Traverse City, on Sunday evening, January 11, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at 5 p.m. Pastor Carroll Sattler will officiate. Burial will be in the spring, at Rose Hill Cemetery, in Maple City. In remembrance of Don, memorial contributions may be directed to either the American Cancer Society, or to the American Heart Association.
