Riker, 84, of Fibre, formerly of South Manitou Island, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005. Born Nov. 4,1920, in Ionia, he was the son of Carl and Mary (Ryckert) Riker. On Aug. 4, 1943, he married Esther Westervelt, who preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2004. The Rikers owned and operated a farm for many years, both on South Manitou Island and in Fibre. They had immense pride in the polled Herefords they raised on their farm. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Ronald; and a sister, Arlene (Riker) McCabe. Surviving are two sons, Russell (Cindy) Riker of Bois Blank Island and Richard (Susan) Riker of West Olive; five grandchildren, Shalyn Riker, Shannon Riker, Stuart Riker, Sara Riker and Christine Riker; brother, Robert (Ramona) Riker; brother, Joseph (Mary) Riker; sister, Rose (Martin) Leyer; sister, Margie (William) Strickler; and sister, Sally (Sam) Austin/(Keene); and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service for both Edward and Esther is being planned in the spring on South Manitou Island. A tentative date in May is anticipated and will be announced upon being finalized.
