Elbode, 86, of Traverse City, died on Thursday. Born June 18, 1914, in Middleton, Morris was raised in Empire. He was the son of Belgian immigrants, Felix and Bertha (Braat) Elbode. His family moved to Empire when he was a toddler and joined the early Belgian immigrants who settled there. On April 10, 1937, he married the former Agnes Edwards of Traverse City at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Karlin. Morris was a longtime employee at Consumers Power Co., retiring in 1976 after 37 years of service. He began his career as a hydroelectric operator at Hodenpyl Dam on the Manistee River in Mesick. When he retired, he was supervisor for the metering department for the Northwest District based in Traverse City. Following his retirement, he became an energy consultant, marketing generators to local fruit packing plants, and was electrical inspector for Leelanau County for a number of years. He served on the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners and was active in Elmwood Township government, serving on their recreation committee and Board of Review. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan and the State Commission on Aging Finance Review Committee. Morris was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a strong proponent of the Catholic School system. He is survived by his wife of 63 years; five daughters, Pauline (Robert) Wegener of Empire, Judith (Charles) Belanger and Marian (John) Werner, both of Suttons Bay, Mary (Richard) Round and Kathryn (Charles) Pittenger, both of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Clara (Arnold) Hansen and Mary, in infancy. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Sunday, March 4, from 6:30 until 8 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. James Gardiner serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery in Empire. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools Band Program.
