Johnson, 83, a retired metallurgical engineer, of Chicago and Glen Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in Wheaton, Ill., following a lengthy illness. Born April 25, 1921, in Empire, he was the son of George and Sarah (Dunn) Johnson, early settlers of Leelanau County. Mr. Johnson was very proud of his heritage and spent the last 20 years enjoying his retirement at the family homestead. A graduate of Campion Jesuit High School in Prarie DuChien, Wis., he continued his education and graduated from the University of Notre Dame. Survivors include his wife, Nancy; his children, Sara (Charles) Ofenloch, Margaret (Timothy) Leahy, Katherine (John) Collins, George (Gail) Johnson, Patricia McTigue and Mary Nina Hanselmann; 19 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia Dutmers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Johnson; and his brother, James. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at 11 a.m., where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The Rev. Fr. Garth Hilmer will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Catholic Cemetery following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Glen Lake Preservation Fund, PO Box 553, Glen Arbor, MI 49636.
