Mingus Died June 15, 2000 EMPIRE - Richard G. Mingus, 68, of Empire, died Thursday. Born Sept. 11, 1931, in East Lansing, he was the son of Birg and Helen (Garver) Mingus. On June 25, 1955, in Traverse City, he married Marian Myers. Richard served in the U.S. Air Force from December 1951 to January 1970 and retired as a TSGT. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed refinishing furniture. Richard was a member of St. Philips. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Marian of Empire; two sons, Steven (Pam) Mingus of Traverse City and David Mingus of Lansing; two daughters, Linda (Wayne) Taghon of Empire and Gayle (Charles) Reynolds of Oak Park, Mich.; eight grandchildren; a brother, Cleon Mingus of East Lansing; and three sisters, Barbara Cruz and Lila Little - both of Lansing and Evelyn Teed of Swartz Creek, Mich. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Birg Mingus Jr.; and a sister, Betty Kain. Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church; the Rev. Chad Zielinski will serve as celebrant. Memorial contributions may be directed to Empire Fire and Rescue or to Airman's Memorial Fund.
