Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. -------------------------------------- TRAVERSE CITY RECORD EAGLE - 3 July 2003 EMPIRE - Jeanette Agnes Salisbury Cheney, 92, a lifelong resident of Empire, died Tuesday in Empire. She was a 1929 graduate of Empire High School and graduated as a registered nurse from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Grand Rapids. Over the years, Jeanette was a Leelanau County nurse; and, with her husband, she owned and operated Salisbury Hardware in Empire from 1940 to 1967. She also worked as a nurse at Munson Medical Center and in various doctors' offices. Jeanette was an avid bridge player, a founding member of the Traverse City Zonta Club, a member of the Traverse City Senior Center and a lifelong member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, where she was involved in religious education. Jeanette represented the American Cancer Society in Leelanau County, had been involved in scouting and was able to continue driving until she was 89 years old. She especially enjoyed traveling with her family and her sisters. Born June 25, 1911, in Empire, she was the daughter of Mark and Jane (DuFrane) Deering Sr. In Empire, Jeanette married Chester F. Salisbury Sr., who preceded her in death in July 1973. A few years later, she married Edwin Cheney, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Fred J. (Beatrice) Salisbury and Chet F. Salisbury Jr.; two brothers, Mark (Alice) Deering Jr. and Warren (Orpha) Deering, all of Empire; five grandchildren, Fred (Jackie) Salisbury Jr., Ross (Cindy) Salisbury, Lisa (Ray) Czapek, Stuart Salisbury and Collin Salisbury; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Jeanette was also preceded in death by two infant children; two sisters, Alice and Velma; and three brothers, Clifford, Tom and Richard. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, July 7, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire. Father William Lipscomb will serve as celebrant. Friends may call at the church on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.
