Your Memorialists, citizens of the Counties of Monroe and Lenawee in the Territory of Michigan, suffering the inconveniences common to first settlers-a considerable one of which is the want of passable roads, and having expended most of our resources in purchasing our lands, and emigrating hither, would respectfully solicit you to make an appropriation of money, for the purpose of constructing a road westerly from Port Lawrence, situated near the mouth of Maumee River to a point on the Chicago road, about fifty miles distant. The legislative Council, considering the importance of such road, have made the necessary location for it; and your Memorialists believe that no road which could be made in the Territory, would be of so great utility, or contribute so much to general convenience, as that above specified: since it would open a direct communication between the best harbor on Lake Erie, and the extensive and increasing settlenients on the River St. Joseph. To the Inhabitants of the interior, we deem it indispensable; inasmuch as without the aid of such road, they cannot, without great expense, exchange their products for such articles as their necessities urgently require. If Congress should, at the ensuing session, think proper to appropriate a sum sufficient only to make a part of said road, to wit, from Port Lawrence to Adrian, about thirty two miles,- it would be gratefully received by your Memorialists.
