Van Hoovenburg in Hillsdale, on the Chicago Road. one mile west of the said intersection with it, to be Called Indus, said Van Hoovenburg to be appointed, Post Master, -The Reasons which your memorialist would assign are-First that the contemplated Route is the shortest and most eligible, over which, the Mail from East and South East intended for the Southern and South Western parts of this peninsula can be carried, The aggregate distance between the two Extreme points mentioned, is fifty nine miles as follows, from Port Lawrence. to Whites Falls ten miles from thence to Blissfield, where there is now an office, thirteen miles, from thence to Palmyra five miles, from thence to Adrian, six miles, (there being offices at the Last mentioned places,) from Adrian to Knapps. ten miles, from thence to Van Hoovenburgs fifteen miles, whereas the mail now travels over a distance of one hundred miles, between the same Extreme points, Hence it will plainly appear that the mail starting from Port Lawrence for the Southern or Southwestern parts of the Territory, will reach its place of destination at least one day sooner. by the Contemplated Route, than by the present one, all of which will more fully appear by reference to the following diagrams of the proposed and existing routes, and second that the flourishing and rapidly increasing Settlements of those places where offices are asked call Loudly, for their establishment, as the inhabitants are now so remote from offices, that they are deprived of the privilege of receiving newspapers, or Letters from their friends unless at a very Considerable expense, and Loss of time. For the purpose of shewing the rapid increase of population in the vicinity of places where offices are established, a comparative statement of the receipts for the currant years of 1830 and 1833. of the office at Adrian is given, For the year 1830. the amt recd was $127.33 1/2. for. the year 1833. it was $431.39 3/4 - - It has been thought proper to have the establishment of an office in the neighbourhood of Knapps. the subject of a seperate petition (See note 2.)
