He was born to Clare and Agatha (Austin) Camburn on May 19, 1927 at the family Centennial Farm in Macon, MI where he lived until his death. He attended the Henry Ford School in Macon and , after his military service, earned bachelor and masters degrees in Business Administration from Cleary College in Ypsilanti, MI. Bob began working at Argus Camera in Ann Arbor two years prior to serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After his service, he returned to Argus where he worked until 1962. In 1964, he began working for Standard Federal Savings Bank of Lenewee County rising to the position of Vice President and retired in 1990. One of Bob’s passions was music. He was most proud of his association with Conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra to which he donated a very rare, signed, hand drawn score of the Stars and Stripes Forever which was given to Bob’s father by John Philip Sousa. Bob was twice invited to conduct the Boston Pops in renditions of the Stars and Stripes to which, after the second performance, Maestro Lockhart jokingly told the audience, "I hate competition". Bob had many hobbies, one of which was an interest in antique cars. He formerly owned a 1937 Packard in which Eleanor Roosevelt once rode. Bob was well known for his antique prowess. After his retirement, he spent many hours and miles collecting, re-conditioning and dealing in the antique business. He was considered an expert in Cranberry glass. Robert was dearly loved by many and will be deeply missed. He shared his home with friends and friends of friends. The twice a year "Camburn Party" was a tradition friends looked forward to. Bob welcomed all people and never flinched or grimaced as a toddler waddled through his antique laden, highly breakable home or tried to catch one of his peacocks. Bob was the treasurer of the Macon Cemetery and formerly served as Chairman of the Clinton Fall Festival. He was a member of the Scottish Studies Group and hosted several inspired meetings. Surviving are a brother, Ralph Camburn of Las Vegas, NV, two nieces, Mindy (Larry) Watkins of Lakeland, FL and Claire Jo Camburn of Norwalk, CA , great nephew Richard D. Hoehn , great niece Tanya M. Camburn and a cousin, Max Camburn. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society. The funeral will be held at Purse Funeral Home, 210 W. Pottawatamie St, Tecumseh, MI on Sunday January 9, 2005 at 1:00PM. Interment will follow in Macon Cemetery with military honors. Please call 517-423-2121 for further details.
