Obituaries Charles Maynard Manley, 78. of Tecumseh, passed away Sept. 29, 2008, at Herrick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by members of the family he loved. Charlie was born at home on Kilbuck Street in Tecumseh on Feb. 28, 1930, the oldest son of Charles J. and Blanche Elizabeth (Maynard) Manley. He shared his parents with his younger brother Robert and his sister Marilyn. His father was a member of the Tecumseh Fire Department for 21 years, and his mother was well known as the office manager of the Coal Depot on Evans Street. Charlie was an avid student of history who took great pride in his family’s deep roots in Tecumseh. He was always proud to say that his grandchildren are members of a sixth generation Tecumseh family. In 1994, he videotaped his childhood memories of Tecumseh for an oral history project. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1948, where he met his life-long sweetheart, Alice Everlove, who he married Aug. 26, 1948, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. In August, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together Charlie and Alice raised three girls, two boys and a grandson. All of the children inherited Charlie’s intellectual curiosity, love of a good story and the ability to make lifelong friends. He was grandfather to six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Charlie’s large family was his greatest pride, joy and legacy. When he was 19 years old, Curtis Brown asked Charlie to be his personal secretary at the Tecumseh Products Company. He always felt privileged to have learned the refrigeration business from Mr. Brown and the other founders of the Products. His career advanced through the sales organization. He retired as manager of the sales order administration with 48 years of service. Following his retirement, he continued to work for the Products as a consultant, and was often called upon to share his knowledge of the company’s early history. Most recently, he worked for the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home. Charlie gave back to his community through public service on the Franklin Township Board and the Tecumseh Planning Commission. He was a member of the Tecumseh Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. His hobby was antique automobiles and he was an active member of the Irish Hills Antique Car Club. Besides his wife, Alice, Charles is survived by five children: Victoria Manley of Naperville, Ill., Kathryn Manley of Kentwood, Mich., James (Erva) Manley of Tecumseh, Mary (Bryan) Koebbe of Adrian, Robert Manley of Tecumseh and the grandson he raised, Richard Manley.
