He was born in New Jersy and settled in Tecumseh in 1832. Internment at that place. Adrian Daily Times and Expositor. May 30, 1898. page 3, col. 2 ARCHLESS HAMILTON Archless HAMILTON, who was probably the oldest penson in this county or section, died at 8:15 a.m. yesterday, at the home of his son, P.A. HAMILTON, No. 404 Jefferson St. Elkhart, In. The deceased was born in New Jersey in 1797 and if had lived until the first of July next would have rounded out one hundred and one years. He had always enjoyed rugged health, and had a good appetite and ability to sleep well until last Thursday. He then became unable to digest or assimilate solid food, and the collapse soon followed. The first years of his young manhood were spent on the sea, and he was first mate of a coast vessel for four years. One treasure he cherished was his commission as first Lt. of the New Jersey militia, which bore the date of 1828. Mr. HAMILTON came to Tecumseh, Michigan, from the east in 1832, and resided there until December, 1896, when he came to Elkhart and took up his residence with his son, P.S. HAMILTON. Other surviving children are: Joseph HAMILTON, of West Milan, Michigan: William, of Dundee, N.Y., and DeWitt, of six miles south of town. Mr. HAMILTON was twice married, his first wife fying in 1850 and the second wife two years ago. The interment will be held at Tecumseh, the remains being taken there on the early train tomorrow. Short services will be conducted at the house at 6 p.m. today, by REv. C.H. Brown. The remains may be view between 4 and 6 o'clock. Buried Raisin Center Cemetery Elkhart Daily Review 30 May 1898 dz
