Kuney of 684 Madison Street, was drowned just before noon Saturday at Devils Lake while bathing. The body had not been recovered at 1:00 o'clock today although a search conducted since Saturday afternoon by members of the sheriff's force was being supplemented today by the efforts of Add Thatcher, a professional diver of Toledo. The young man, in company with a group of young people from Adrian and Sylvania, Ohio, was just beginning a week's vacation to be spent in a cottage known as Cottage Grove. With Ray Hensey of this city he was wading out from shore holding to the edge of a boat when he apparently stepped into a deep hole in the lake bottom. Cottagers standing on the shore reported to Sheriff Arch Wilson that they saw young Kuney disappear into the water but Mr. Hensey did not see the accident. He said he did not know anything had happened to his friend until he noticed he was no longer alongside the boat. When he did not appear immediately he gave the alarm and a search for the body was begun. The sheriff's department was notified and the lake was dragged Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Charges of dynamite were also exploded in the water in the hope that the force of the concussion might raise the body. Young Kuney was graduated from Adrian High School in 1918.Recently he has been employed in Pittsburgh and was home for his summer vacation. In the party at the lake cottage were the Misses Mildred and Helen Hensey of Adrian, Miss Wanda Trowbridge and Miss Ellen Fletcher of Sylvania and Ray Hensey of Adrian. The young man's death seemed to have a particularly sad significance because it recalled the tragic death 10 years ago of his sister, Gladys Kuney, who was killed when her automobile was struck by a New York Central passenger train at a crossing not far from the Kuney home on Madison Street." From the Adrian Telegram, July 28, 1925: "Diver Recovers Body of Kuney Boy Monday Found in 12 Feet of Water 150 Feet Off Shore-- The body of Kenneth Kuney, who was drowned in Devils Lake Saturday while bathing, was recovered shortly before 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon by a Toledo diver working in water about 12 feet deep. According to Sheriff Arch Wilson, who was directing the search, the young man apparently had gone down about 150 feet from the shore in a place where the beach made a rapid decent. Coroner Wynn C. Lewis was called from Adrian but he decided no inquest was necessary and the body was brought to the Mott funeral home. The funeral is to be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home of the young man's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kuney of 685 Madison Street. The Rev. Edward Montgomery is to be in charge and the burial is to be made in Oakwood Cemetery. Diving for the body was begun about 10 o'clock yesterday morning. An improvised raft and a large row boat carried the apparatus used in connection with the diving outfit. The diving equipment and diver was supplied by Add Thatcher of Toledo who was at Devils Lake at the time the accident happened. A considerable portion of the lake bottom in the vicinity of the accident's location was gone over in the morning without result but late in the afternoon persons on shore directed the searchers to a new location and the second time the diver went down he found the body. Weeds were clutched in the young man's hand and it is believed hen he steeped into the water beyond his depth he lost his grip on the boat alongside of which he was wading and sinking into the deep water drowned almost immediately. The deceased had been in business in Pittsburgh in a partnership with Harold L. Pagol who came today from Pittsburgh to attend the funeral services. Mr. Kuney had been home for several weeks and at the time of his death was a member of a house party composed of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Furbush, and the Misses Mildred and Helen Hensey of Adrian, Wanda Trowbridge and Ellen Fletcher of Sylvania and Ray Hensey of Adrian."
