The deceased was born in Jefferson County, New York, June 23rd, 1813. His youth was spent in his native country and in 1833 he came to Michigan. In July 1936 he was united in marriage to Mary A. BOYNTON, of Clinton, when he took up his residence in the township of Tecumseh and worked at his trade, which was that of a carpenter and joiner, until 1840. In that year he began to work in the old Tecumseh foundry and continued in that establishment through the different changes in its management for 35 years, until April 1875. In that month he seriously injured one hand which disabled him for several months, and he was unable to perform any manual labor after that time. He united with the Universalist church at the time of its organization in August 1886, and was chosen Deacon at the first church election, which position he continued to occupy until the day of his death. He was a man of strong convictions and decided views on all subjects, and was remarkably well informed for a man who had so little leisure time for reading. His station in life was a humble one, but every duty devolving upon him--to himself, to his family, to society, to his church--was most faithfully performed. He was respected as an exemplar by those who knew him. A kind father, a patriotic citizen, a true Christian gentleman has ceased his earthly labors and gone to meet his elder brother, who set out on the heavenly journey only three short weeks before. They were brothers on earth--in heaven they will not be separated. Mrs. Mary Ann McNEIL Tecumseh Herald September 19, 1899 Mrs. Mary Ann McNEIL passed to the beyond at her home in this village Saturday, September 9, after an illness of five days, and her body, under a profusion of fragrant flowers, mementos of love, was laid to final rest on the 12th. Mary Ann BOYNTON was born at Evans Mills, Jefferson County, New York March 8, 1820, and moved with her parents to Michigan in 1832, experiencing the privations and hardships belonging to the territory and wilderness, as settlers of Clinton township. She was united in marriage to Archibald McNEIL July 4, 1836, and moved to the township of Tecumseh. In 1852 they came into the village of Tecumseh where she resided until her death. She was the mother of eight children, all of whom grieve her. Since the death of the husband and father, she has lived in the old home with her four daughters and was very tenderly cared for. She united with the Universalist church class at the time of its organization, August 1866, remaining a faithful and worthy member to the last. Of a quiet, even make-up, she passed calmly down the stream of life into the harbor of eternal repose, enjoying the personal regard and esteem of all who knew her during her long years. She was idolized by her children who, after their first great grief, must find comfort in the sweet memory left them to cherish. "Weep not that her toils are over, Weep not that her race is run; God grant we may rest as calmly When our work, like hers, is done! 'Till then we would yield with gladness Our treasures to Him to keep And rejoice in the sweet assurance He giveth his loved ones sleep." M. S. R. dz
