He was the fourth of a family of nine children, seven of whom grew to maturity. His parents Samuel and Elizabeth(Lyon)Phillips, were married in Greenfield, Franklin Co., MA, Jan. 28, 1795. They lived in Bennington Co., VT, untill 1811, when they moved to Ontario, now Monroe Co., NY. Mr Phillips married Permilla Wood, daughter of Levi and Bethany(Fuller)Wood, Jan 23,1828. They were the parents of eight children: Betsy L., Laura F, Zelora, Mary, Jane E., Dorr, Ray and Arabell. Two of his sons, Dorr and Ray, were in the Civil War. His wife died Sept. 7, 1865, after which Mr Phillips moved to Hillsdale Co., MI, where he lived until 1877, when he came to Hudson and bought his place of residence, and has lived in comparative retirement ever since. He was married second to Mrs Eliza(Smith)Clark, who still survives him. The funeral services took place at his late home, and were conducted by the pastor of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. Bradley, of the Cong'l church.
