Smallshaw SUBMITTER: William Smallshaw EMAIL: ptbuff@prodigy.net DATE: May 12, 1999 SURNAMES: SMALLSHAW, LASSEY, SPECK, MYERS, BLACKMORE Man of 229,950 Hair Cuts Dies At 92 On West Coast A former Adrian barber who estimated on the occasion of his retirement in 1947 that he had handled the shears, clippers and conversation for 229,950 hair cuts died Saturday in San Diego. He was Thomas C. [sic] SMALLSHAW, 92 years old. Mr. SMALLSHAW died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Doris LASSEY. He left Adrian to live with his daughter and other relatives on the coast in 1948. Mrs. SMALLSHAW died in San Diego five years ago. Three years ago Mr. SMALLSHAW suffered a broken hip in a fall. He had been confined to his bed and a wheel chair since. Mr. SMALLSHAW was a barber for 63 years, learning the trade in Detroit. He opened his first shop in Adrian in the old Family Theater building on North Main Street and then for 47 years was located at 137 South Main Street the present location of the Ric & Jim barber shop. Joseph KINGSBURY was associated with Mr. SMALLSHAW in the shop for 42 years. Mr. SMALLSHAW was born in Buffalo, N.Y. He was a past master of the Adrian Masonic lodge. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Clyde [sic] (Myrtle) SPECK of Toledo, and Mrs. LASSEY, ten grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mrs. Harold MARVIN of Adrian is a granddaughter. The funeral services were at Pacific Beach Funeral Home in San Diego. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Masonic services were conducted at the grave.
