All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Theresa Kassuba Johnson kass@avci.net October 12, 2007, 4:16 pm "Deerfield Moon" Newspaper Friday May 25th, 1934 Reuben William Thayer, son of Reuben and Julia Fife Thayer, was born in Ridgeway, Elk Co., Penn., Sept. 2, 1851, and departed this life May 16, 1934, at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 14 days. He came to Deerfield with his parents in the spring of 1854, at the age of 2 1/2 years. They settled on a farm east of Deerfield, where he attended the public school of the village. On Jan. 4, 1875, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary L. Hawkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hawkins, of Deerfield. To this union were born two children - Mrs. Horace Sayles, of Adrian, and Albert Orin Thayer, who preceded his father in death Aug. 6th, 1914. The most of Mr. Thayer's life work was spent in railroad construction, of which he built roads 14 different times, including the Ohio Central, Wheeling & Lake Erie, Pennsylvania, L.S.& M.S., C.S.& C. His last construction work was the grading of the road bed of the Toledo and Indiana Electric interurban line. Mr. Thayer had spent most of his life in Deerfield, living in the same house that they were married in 60 years ago. On Jan. 4, 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Thayer celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary at the home of their daughter and husband, Mrs. and MR. Sayles, of Adrian, with whom they spent the winter. He leaves to mourn the widow, one daughter and her husband, other relatives and many friends. His death occurred in the Emma L. Bixby Hospital, Adrian, where he was taken on Monday, May 14th, after a fall. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, May 19th, at 2 0'clock, at the Hemenway-Valentine Funeral Home. Rev. W. J. Prestidge officiated and read two hymns. The burial was in the family lot in the Deerfield cemetery, the bearers being E.M. Pool, C.C. Beach, Edward Laberdee, Mike Iott, Samuel Welker and George Simpson - all neighbors of the deceased. Those attending the service from away were a nephew, Mr.& Mrs. David Thayer, of Santa Monica, CA; Mr.& Mrs. Geoege Thayer, Mr. & Mrs. Eddie Osborn, Mr.& Mrs. Fred Griswold and Mrs. Goodwin, of Toledo; Mrs. Stanley Bradish, Mrs. Henry Bowerman, Mrs. Jack Naylor, Mrs. George Wetherell and Miss Lou Sayles, of Adrian; Mrs. Jennie Hawkins, of Morenci; Mr. & Mrs. Earl Beach, of Palmyra; Mr. Nina Dunbar and son John, of Birdsall. Additional Comments: Reuben William Thayer's wife is listed as Mary in the obituary but I have found out that she had a nickname which was Nettie and also Lanettie.
