Mr. VanValkenburg was born in Gorham Township on Sept. 11, 1859 the son of Abram and Nancy Hale Van Valkenburg. The particulars of the sad affair, as near as we can learn them, are about as follows: Mr. VanValkenburg went to his barn about 11 o'clock a. m., to repair the track of a hay carrier, which was located just under the roof, and about 28 feet from the barn floor. In some manner he fell to the floor, just how is unknown, as he was alone in the barn at the time. He was immediately taken to the house by kind hands, where he lingered about three hours, when he died. He retained his senses until the last, and informed his friends that the injuries were fatal. Mr. VanValkenburg was a man that was loved and respected by all who knew him. He leaves his wife, the former Bertha Poucher, whom he married on Aug. 13, 1889, and two children, Willie Lee and Rena Ivadel, also one brother, Smith A. Van Valkenburg of Gorham, and a sister, Mrs. John Salsbury, of Morenci, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death. His age was nearly 40 years. He was preceeded in death by a brother Abram VanValkenburg of Mason, Michigan. He was a member of Gorham lodge, No. 387, F. and A. M. who conducted the funeral. The remains were interred in Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. dz
