Reuben W. Thayer, son of Reuben & Julia Thayer (my 3rd great-grandparents)was awarded the contract in October of 1884 to build this vault for a bid of $2,300.00. I have a copy of the actual city minutes that verifies this. The first man that bid on this project, (Jason Hemenway) failed to execute the contract so then it was awarded to Reuben W. Thayer. The large monument you see in front of the vault has the Thayer name on the left front side of it. This is the burial plot for Reuben W. Thayer Sr., his wife, Julia F., their son who built this vault, Reuben W. Thayer, his wife, Mary Lanettie (Hawkins) Thayer and their son, Orrin Albert Thayer.
