During the civil war, John served in Company B. 10th Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry and lost an arm. He married Isabelle Elizabeth Leveille 13 Feb 12 1872 on Mackinac Island and they had eleven children. He died 10 Oct 1903 in Saint Ignace, Michigan.
