Pierre (Peter) was Chief of the Potowatomi Tribe, born 1816 in Penetangushine, Ontario, Canada and died 20 Apr 1856 and is buried in St. Ignatius Cemetery, St. Ignace. Joseph's mother was Margarita Abbott, daughter of Samuel Abbott who held many offices on Mackinac Island and is buried in a crypt on the Island in the Catholic Cemetery. Margarita is buried with her second husband Samuel Vallier at Gros Cap Cemetery, Block 10, Lot 4. Joseph married Mary Lavake, daughter of John & Angelique Langlade Bamachesik Lavake, on 25 Dec 1873. Mary died of consumption on 03 Aug 1875. Joseph then married Josette Bernadetta Goudreau, daughter of Amable & Mary Marie Vallier Goudreau, 29 Apr 1876 and they had eleven children. He died 24 Mar 1935 in Saint Ignace. In a notebook kept by the Blanchard family it states "Joe was the son of a Chief of the Potawatomi and was poisoned by bad medicine". In the Traverse City Chippewa Indian Recretional Center on the ceiling the name KEWANDEWAY is listed with the elders.
