Clemens Monitor, April 3, 1908 CADY, JOHN C.: The funeral of John C. Cady, an old and highly esteemed resident of this vicinity, occurs from the M.E. church this afternoon. Mr. Cady died Thursday morning, after a sickness of but a few days, of pneumonia. He was taken with a chill Thursday night and rapidly grew worse until the end came. John C. Cady was 77 years of age, and was born in Mt. Clemens in the old hotel, or tavern, kept by his father, the late Horace Cady, on the site of the present Sherman House. Horace Cady was one of the veritable pioneers of Macomb county. He died about 15 years ago, more than 80 years of age and was followed by his widow, "Aunt Susan" Cady, some years later, she being more than 90 years of age. Horace Cady was brother to the late Chauncey Cady, who died at the age of 92. The two older Cadys came to Michigan on the historic steamer, Walk-in-the-Water. Jno. C. Cady moved onto the farm in Macomb, that became the Cady homestead, and was a center of friendliness and hospitality for 50 years. He lived there until he died, successfully engaged in farm work. He was twice married, the fruit of the first union being a daughter, now Mrs. C.H. VanEps, of Chicageo, of the second a son, Horace Cady, of Detroit, and a daughter, Mrs. O. O. Lungerhausen of Mt. Clemens. He leaves besides these a widow and two sisters, Mrs. L.H. Canfield of Mt. Clemens, and Mrs. Jordan, of chicago. Another sister, Mrs. Rutter, of Romeo, died a few years ago. He was a man of excellent character whose life was centered in his work and the Methodist church of which he was all his life a devoted member. He was endowed with a fine bass voice, and with his sister, Mrs. Canfield, also a gifted singer, was in large request at concerts and funerals for many years. He was a member of the Methodist choir when he died, and had been 65 years. Mr. Cady sold his farm to the Denewith brothers a short time ago, but the papers were not executed when he died. He was arranging to come to Mt. Clemens to live.
