  Joseph D. Kern
  South Haven - Joseph D. Kern, 81, Route 3, died Sunday, March 16, 1980, in 
South Haven Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
  He was born June 5, 1898 in Graz, Austria to the late Anton & Cecelia 
(Summer)Kern.  He lived in Port Huron since 1910 and in South Haven since 1975.
  Mr. Kern married Florence M. Cosstick, daughter of James and Margaret 
Sculley-Cosstick of Ontario, Canada on June 14, 1922 in Canada. Florence 
preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 1974.
  Joseph is survived by four sons, Joseph Jr., Gladstone, Loren T., Detroit, 
James, Madison Heights and Lawrence, of South Haven; a daughter, Beverly 
Slade, Port Huron; 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
  He was preceded also in death by a daughter, Margaret Pfeiffer who died in 
1975 and a brother, Edward F. Kern in 1977 of Port Huron.
  Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Arthur Smith Funeral Home, South 
Chapel, Port Huron.  The Rev. Robert Wurm, pastor of St. Stephen's Catholic 
Church, Port Huron, will officiate.
  Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, next to his wife, Port Huron.
